Introduction to Cinema Studies

Cinema Studies is a unique medium that tells stories in various ways, having a significant cultural impact and influence over the years. This subject introduces students to the tools and techniques used in film creation, analyzing the structure, cinematic style, and storytelling of films from diverse genres through the lens of theory, history, and culture.


What Will My Study Involve?

  • From the silent era of film to modern day, explore the evolution of movies and filmmaking.
  • Other topics include analysis of scenes, screenwriting, exploration of Māori identity, storytelling for children, and the French New Wave.
  • Students can minor in Cinema Studies in many UC bachelor's degrees.

Courses

Cinema Studies Major

For the major in the Bachelor of Arts, complete the following courses:


  • 100-level: Two 100-level CINE courses
  • 200-level: Three 200-level CINE courses
  • 300-level: Two 300-level CINE courses

Cinema Studies Minor

For the minor in the Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health, Product Design, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership, complete the following courses:


  • 75 points in 100 to 300-level CINE courses, with at least 45 points above 100-level
