Introduction to Music Program
The music industry has undergone significant changes over the last 30 years, driven by the explosion of digital technology and shifts in society and culture. This has opened up new job possibilities for music professionals, alongside traditional roles such as teaching, conducting, leadership, and performing.
What Will My Study Involve?
- With a Bachelor of Music, students can major in Composition, Performance, Music Studies, or Creative Music Technologies.
- Music can also be studied as a major or minor in other degrees.
- The program offers unique learning spaces in the Te Matatiki Toi Ora | Arts Centre campus.
- Students have the opportunity to connect with the community through internships, performances, and collaborative projects.
Courses
- Most Music courses are available without any prior experience.
- Entry to all first-year Performance courses is by application and an audition in an instrument or in singing.
- The Bachelor of Music includes compulsory Music courses, as well as the option to study towards one of the following majors:
- Composition
- Music Production
- Music Studies
- Performance
Music Major
For the major in the Bachelor of Arts, students must complete the following courses:
- 100-level: MUSA100 Essentials in Music Techniques and one course chosen from the options.
- 200-level: One course chosen from the options and 30 points chosen from 200 or 300-level MUSA courses.
- 300-level: 60 points of courses chosen from 300-level MUSA courses.
Music Minor
For the minor in the Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health, Product Design, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership, students must complete 75 points in 100 to 300-level MUSA courses, with at least 45 points above 100-level.
Career Opportunities
The wide range of courses taken during the degree will equip students with skills to perform, create, and critically engage with music and the music industry. Career pathways could include:
- Orchestras, choirs, and opera houses
- Festival management
- Journalism and radio
- Digital production
