Program Overview
Introduction to Youth and Community Leadership
Youth and Community Leadership explores national and global challenges that impact today's youth and our communities, and looks at ways to create meaningful change through leadership. This program allows students to study a range of issues like social justice, sustainability, policy, and equity, with a focus on communities that they want to make a difference in.
Program Structure
Students in the Youth and Community Leadership program will work closely with the university's active student community, who have led efforts in natural disaster relief, social causes, wellbeing, sustainability, and cultural diversity. The program also involves connecting with the community through various activities, including:
- Noho marae
- Volunteering with Te Hunga Tao | Student Volunteer Army
- Working with Te Mtpuna Mttahi | Children's University
Courses and Qualifications
The university offers a Certificate in Youth and Community Leadership and a Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership. A minor in Youth and Community Leadership is also available for students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health, Product Design, Psychological Science, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, or Sport. The minor requires completing the following courses:
- 45 points chosen from specified options
- 30 points chosen from specified options
Career Opportunities
The Youth and Community Leadership program develops skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, project management, bicultural competence, collaboration, and community engagement, preparing students for a career with youth and community. Career pathways could include:
- Youth work
- Policy analysis and advisory
- Iwi and Mori development
- Teaching and training The skills and knowledge gained through this program can be applied to community leadership worldwide.
