Introduction to International Affairs

The International Affairs specialisation combines foreign language with social sciences to understand international relations and political systems. This specialisation opens up experiences beyond Aotearoa while examining our bicultural society.

• A choice in courses based on individual and industry interests – history, politics, Māori culture, media and communications, and more.
• Opportunity to participate in a range of exchanges with UC's international exchange partners.

Courses

International Affairs Specialisation

UC offers a specialisation in International Affairs within the Bachelor of Arts. Specialisations group courses from different subjects into a central theme.

Within the first and second year, students are required to complete language courses selected from:

• Chinese
• French
• German
• Japanese
• Russian
• Spanish
• Te Reo Māori

Students can choose to continue to advanced language courses in their final year, and/or courses in international policies, global tensions, and historical and current affairs.

The following courses are required throughout the degree:

• 100-level:
  • Two language courses from the chosen language
  • One course chosen from specified options
• 200-level:
  • 30 points of language courses from the chosen language
  • Four courses chosen from specified options, with no more than two courses in the same subject
• 300-level:
  • 90 points of courses chosen from specified options, which may include 300-level courses from the language subject. A maximum of 60 points can be from the same subject.

MAOR317 Takahi: Colonisation is highly recommended.

Career Opportunities

This degree will build career pathways in foreign affairs and international relations in government and non-government organisations. Skills such as multicultural awareness and communication will make graduates employable in Aotearoa and overseas.
