Program Overview

Introduction to the BASE9 Program

The BASE9 program is a value-added assessment that utilizes a baseline test administered at the beginning of Year 9 and NCEA results at the end of Year 11. Optional value-added feedback is available at the end of Year 10.

Program Structure

  • The program involves students sitting additional curriculum-based tests in English, mathematics, science, and social studies.
    • These tests are administered by the Centre of Assessment and Monitoring (CAM), which provides the baseline assessment booklets at the beginning of Year 9.
    • Schools send the completed booklets back to CAM for marking and analysis.
  • Schools receive raw results and standardized feedback for the baseline assessment.
  • At the end of February following Year 11, schools receive value-added feedback for the period from Years 9 to 11 in 18-22 Year 11 subjects.

Year 10 Option

  • Currently registered schools have the option to measure value-added in English, mathematics, science, and social studies in Year 10.
    • Schools indicate their interest in this option when registering for the BASE9 project.
    • Confirmation of interest and registration of Year 10 students are required when the students reach Year 10.
  • Students sit four 20-minute assessments online at the end of Term 3 when they are in Year 10.
  • Value-added results from the Year 9 baseline to Year 10 are released to the school in December of that year.

Assessment and Feedback

  • The BASE9 program provides schools with detailed feedback on student progress from Year 9 to Year 11.
  • The value-added assessment allows schools to track student growth and development over time.
  • The program's focus on curriculum-based tests in key subjects ensures that the assessments are relevant and meaningful for students and teachers.
