Program Overview
Undergraduate Program of Business English
The Undergraduate Program of Business English provides students with a well-rounded academic foundation in linguistics, economics, management, international commercial laws, and international business rules and practices. The program aims to prepare students to be interdisciplinary and application-oriented talents with abilities and skills in English proficiency, business practice, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, innovation, and independent learning.
Key Learning Outcomes
When students fulfill the four-year undergraduate program, they are equipped with:
- Language Proficiency: A good command of a range of business English skills and a passing score in the standardized test of English proficiency.
- Business Expertise: Knowledge of international business rules and practices, and the ability to tackle complex business issues with professional knowledge and business skills.
- Communication Competence: A global vision and the ability to make efficient communication with counterparts and the public in the international context.
- Research Capacity: The ability to employ scientific theories and methods to solve complex business problems.
- Industry Norms: Understanding and compliance with industry norms and ethics, and fulfillment of social responsibility.

Core Curricula
The program includes a range of core curricula, such as:
- Comprehensive Business English and English Reading Courses: Comprehensive Business English, Advanced Comprehensive Business English, Business English Reading, Reading English Newspaper and Magazines, Selected Readings from British and American Literature, Overview of Chinese Culture.
- English Listening and Speaking Courses: English Phonetics Practice, Business English Reading, Business English Speaking.
- English Writing Courses: English Writing Rudiments, Practical English Writing, English Research Paper Writing.
- Business Translation Courses: Business Translation, Business Interpretation.
- Business Courses: Contemporary Business Conspectus, Introduction to Economics, Introduction to Management, International Trade, International Commercial Law, International Finance, Business Negotiation, Management in International Engineering Project, Marketing Management, E-Commerce.
Core Requirements
The curriculum system includes:
- Compulsory Courses: Liberal Education and Public Foundation Courses, Discipline-level and Specialized Basic Courses, Specialized (or within the major) courses.
- Selective Courses: Students are required to take a certain number of selective courses to fulfill the credit requirements.
- Credit Requirements: The total credits required for graduation are 166, including 43 credits for Liberal Education and Public Foundation Courses, 88 credits for Discipline-level and Specialized Basic Courses, and 27 credits for Specialized (or within the major) courses.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes a range of courses, such as:
- Liberal Education and Public Foundation Courses: Ideology and Moral Cultivation & Basics of Law, Outline of Chinese Modern History, Introduction to Mao Zedong Thought and the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics I, Mao Zedong's Thought and the Theory System of Chinese Characteristics Socialism II, The Basic Principles of Marxism.
- Discipline-level and Specialized Basic Courses: Advanced Mathematics, Computer Basics, Comprehensive Business English, English Phonetics Practice, Business English Listening, Business English Reading, English Writing Rudiments, Practical English Writing.
- Specialized (or within the major) Courses: Contemporary Business Conspectus, International Trade, International Commercial Law, Marketing Management, E-Commerce, International Finance, Business Negotiation.
- Graduation Project (Thesis): Students are required to complete a graduation thesis to fulfill the requirements for graduation.
Compulsory Section
The compulsory section includes:
- Freshmen Orientation: Implemented in accordance with the Management Regulations of Freshmen Orientation of Southwest Jiaotong University.
- Current Situation and Policies: No credits are awarded for this course.
- Extracurricular Activities: Implemented in accordance with the Management Regulations of the Second Classroom established by the League Commission.
