Introduction to the English Language Education Program

The English language education program at Waseda University is designed to develop comprehensive English language skills through three main programs: Tutorial English, Listening and Reading, and Academic Writing and Discussion in English (AWADE).

Program Overview

The program focuses on speaking, reading, and listening, as well as writing, to help students overcome their weaknesses and develop their overall English language skills. The goal is to enable students to gain confidence in understanding others and expressing their opinions in English in a variety of situations.

Key Learning Areas

  • Tutorial English: Develops speaking skills through small classes with one tutor for every four students.
  • Listening and Reading: Focuses on listening and reading in English, covering a range of topics from everyday life to academic situations, with one teacher for every 20 students.
  • Academic Writing and Discussion in English (AWADE): Develops writing skills, with one teacher for every 12 students, and includes the completion of a 1000-word essay.

Program Structure

  • Class sizes are appropriate for the purposes and activities, allowing for personalized and accurate feedback.
  • An English-only policy is maintained in all classes to naturally develop listening skills.
  • The program prepares students for study abroad by engaging them in discussions, presentations, and writing assignments.

Tutorial English

  • Offers four levels: Basic, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, and Advanced.
  • Classes are small, with one tutor for every four students, allowing for steady progress throughout the year.

Academic Writing and Discussion in English (AWADE)

  • Teaches students how to write essays in English step by step, starting with 500-word essays and culminating in a 1000-word essay.
  • Develops critical and logical thinking skills in English through activities.

Program Philosophy

The program aims to teach English communication skills required for future global citizens, not just grammar and vocabulary. It emphasizes the importance of proper sentence composition, structure, and supporting arguments for effective communication. The goal is to enable students to express their thoughts clearly and persuasively in English, contributing positively to the international community.
