Program Overview

Introduction to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Medical College of Wisconsin offers a three-year Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This program is designed to provide fellows with the expertise and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of pediatric emergency medicine.

Program Overview

The PEM Fellowship program at the Medical College of Wisconsin is a comprehensive training program that includes clinical training, research, and education. The program is based at Children's Wisconsin, a state-of-the-art, 306-bed facility that is the only free-standing pediatric hospital in Wisconsin. The hospital has a 68-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a 50-bed Emergency Department and Trauma Center (EDTC) that sees over 75,000 visits annually.

Clinical Training

Fellows in the PEM program receive clinical training in the EDTC, where they work alongside experienced faculty members, advanced practice providers (APPs), and other fellows. The EDTC is a Level 1 trauma center that provides care to children of all ages, from infancy to young adulthood. Fellows participate in the care of patients with a wide range of conditions, from minor illnesses and injuries to life-threatening emergencies.

Research and Scholarly Activities

The PEM Fellowship program at the Medical College of Wisconsin places a strong emphasis on research and scholarly activities. Fellows are expected to complete a significant research project during their fellowship, with the goal of presenting their work at national conferences and publishing their findings in peer-reviewed journals. Fellows have access to a wide range of research resources, including statistical support, research mentors, and funding opportunities. Areas of research interest in the section include trauma, injury prevention, asthma, violence, and quality improvement, among others. Fellows are also encouraged to collaborate with other departments and institutions on research projects, and to participate in multi-center studies and clinical trials. The program provides training in research design, statistics, and scientific writing, and fellows are expected to develop a research question, design a study, collect and analyze data, and present their findings in a clear and concise manner. The program also provides opportunities for fellows to participate in quality improvement projects, and to develop skills in areas such as patient safety, medical education, and healthcare policy. Fellows are also encouraged to pursue additional training in research methods, such as a master's degree in clinical and translational science.
