Program Overview


Medical College of Wisconsin Endocrine Surgery Fellowship

The Endocrine Surgery Fellowship program in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin is an AAES-accredited one-year, multidisciplinary clinical fellowship program. The program is designed to provide advanced training and research opportunities in disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands to board-eligible or board-certified general surgeons.


Eligibility Criteria

  • At the time of entry into the fellowship program, all applicants will be board eligible or board certified general surgeons under the auspices of the American Board of Surgery
  • Applicants must have passed each of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) steps
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must have a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)

Special Considerations

  • Candidates must be eligible to obtain licensure to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin. A valid license to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin must be obtained prior to the start of the fellowship year
  • The candidate must be eligible to obtain their DEA Certificate prior to beginning of the fellowship
  • The fellow will be required to apply for privileges at the Clement Zablocki Veterans Administration Center, in addition to several other non-governmental institutions

Program Overview

  • The Endocrine Surgery Fellowship is an AAES-accredited one-year, multidisciplinary clinical fellowship program
  • One fellow is accepted into the program annually
  • The fellowship is a collaborative program between Endocrine Surgery (Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology) and Head and Neck Surgery (Department of Otolaryngology).
  • Rotations:
    • Endocrine Surgery – 10 months
    • Head and Neck Surgery – 1 month
    • Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Molecular Medicine – 1 month
  • Fellows are considered members of faculty and are funded as an Instructor in the Department of Surgery. As an Instructor, fellows are expected to:
    • Participate in medical student and resident education
    • Participate in clinical, education, and/or basic science research
    • Participate in scholarly activity at the local, regional, and national level

Clinical Experience

The fellow will:


  • Perform over 200 major surgical endocrine cases during the period of surgical training. Cases include, but are not limited to:
    • Thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node dissection
    • Parathyroidectomy-minimally invasive and bilateral exploration
    • Advance thyroid operations-including thyroid malignancies, substernal goiters
    • Modified lateral neck dissections
    • Reoperative surgery of the neck
    • Open and minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) adrenalectomy (retroperitoneal and transabdominal approaches)
  • Perform and become proficient in cervical ultrasound, thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA), and fiberoptic laryngoscopy
  • Have the opportunity to perform and become proficient in thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

The AAES Comprehensive Endocrine Surgery Fellowship Curriculum will be covered over the course of the year.

Research

The fellow will participate in the weekly Endocrine Surgery Research Meeting and have exposure to the principles of conducting clinical research, scientific communications, surgical education, research ethics and management. Fellows are expected to actively engage in Endocrine Surgery Research to exceed the requirements set by the AAES. Opportunities are provided through:


  • Robust divisional disease-site specific databases in addition to access to national disease-site specific databases
  • Support by departmental statisticians and IRB coordinator
  • Mentorship through weekly Endocrine Surgery Research Meetings

Patient Care

The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Endocrine Surgery Program is dedicated to improving the care of patients with endocrine disorders. This program uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide the latest advances in endocrine surgery.
