Medical College of Wisconsin Pediatric Urology Fellowship

The mission of the Medical College of Wisconsin Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program is to provide each trainee with clinical, surgical, research, teaching, and administrative skills to provide outstanding medical and surgical management of pediatric patients with complex urologic problems. This is done through training our house staff with an emphasis on compassion for patients and providing cost-effective care. Our program supports a diverse and innovative culture for all faculty, house staff, and administrative personnel.

Children's Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin's two-year urology ACGME-approved fellowship program is structured to provide fellows with a rich training experience and prepare trainees for careers in academic pediatric urology. Fellows will develop in knowledge, skills, and judgment to function independently and at an advanced level in the medical and surgical management of pediatric patients with complex urological problems and develop a thirst for future study and learning which will endure throughout a productive career in pediatric urology.

Meet Our Director | Travis Groth, MD

Dr. Groth is a pediatric urologist who treats infants, children, and teens in all aspects of pediatric urology. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery and robotic laparoscopic surgery. This technology allows him to do surgery with smaller incisions leading to smaller scars (better cosmetics), decreased pain, and quicker recovery compared to open surgeries with similar success rates.

Dr. Groth graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 2003, completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2008, and his fellowship there in 2009. He has also received a "Best Doctors in America" award.

Dr. Groth is certified in both Pediatric Urology and Urology.

As a Fellow, You Will...

• Receive training for clinical, surgical, research, teaching, and administrative skills to provide outstanding medical and surgical management of pediatric patients with complex urologic problems.
• Develop requisite skills to perform the full spectrum of pediatric urological care and surgery.
• Participate twice a month in a spina bifida clinic. A full complement of specialty services attends, including neurosurgery, orthopedics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, in addition to appropriate ancillary services.
• Train at a center of excellence designated by the Association for the Bladder Exstrophy Community (ABEC).
• Have an opportunity to take graduate-level classes the second year to enhance the skill set required to engage in meaningful and valid clinical research and outcomes.

About Our Fellowship

Academic Curriculum

Educational activities of the fellowship program will instruct the trainee in the assessment and management of pediatric urologic disease to assure appropriate technical skills and an appreciation of surgical anatomy and physiology. Second-year fellows continue to refine clinical and surgical practices under the preceptorship of our faculty; however, the majority of time will be spent in academic pursuits and research.

Clinical Experience

Clinical activities focus on secondary and tertiary care and will provide fellows with a broad experience preparing them for the practice of pediatric urology. The first year is dedicated to developing a clinical skill set for the evaluation, management, and post-operative care of the full spectrum of pediatric urological problems. Surgical experience is gained both in the hospital setting as well as at an outpatient surgery center. Daily duties include inpatient rounds, consults, outpatient visits, OR coverage, and ambulatory clinics. The fellow is in the clinic one day of the week.

Research Experience

The fellow will develop and engage in an independent basic science research project or detailed original clinical study as delineated by the program, the principal investigator, and the fellow during the second year of fellowship.

Application Process

Our 2-year fellowship program is ACGME accredited and begins on July 1 each year. We accept one fellow every year through the Societies for Pediatric Urology Fellowship Application. Applicants must have completed a US-accredited residency program.
