Program Overview
Introduction to the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin provides a dynamic opportunity for fellows to become pediatric hospital medicine physicians with expertise in providing evidence-based care of pediatric inpatients. The program aims to equip fellows with the skills to work in both academic and community-focused PHM programs and participate collaboratively as leaders in the field.
Program Overview
The two-year fellowship is designed to produce academic and clinical leaders within the specialty. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and includes clinical, scholarly, and professional experiences that help fellows reach their individual goals.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes:
- Inpatient hospital medicine rotations at Children's Wisconsin
- Community hospital medicine rotations at Children's Wisconsin Fox Valley
- Required key clinical rotations in areas such as newborn nursery, special needs/complex care, sedation, palliative care, and others
- Elective rotations that allow fellows to select clinical and non-clinical electives aligning with their individual interests and career goals
- Longitudinal experiences in teaching, medical education, leadership, hospital administration, practice management, and value-driven care
- Research and scholarly activities, including a scholarly project in areas such as clinical research, education, or quality improvement
Conference Series
The program includes a fellows-centered didactic curriculum, comprising:
- PHM Fellows Conferences, including a core conference series and board review curriculum
- Pediatric Event Review and Learning (PEaRL) Curriculum
- Quality Improvement Learning Lab (QuILL)
- Medical Education Curriculum
- Multidisciplinary Conference Series, including FACTS (Fellow Advancement through Career Development, Training, and Scholarship) and Department of Pediatrics conferences
Clinical Experience
Fellows gain extensive clinical experience at both Children's Wisconsin Main Campus and Fox Valley, including:
- Inpatient service experience
- Rotations in hospital medicine, newborn nursery, pulmonary consults, procedural sedation, special needs/complex care, and palliative medicine
- Elective options in transport medicine, emergency medicine, and multiple subspecialty electives
Research Experience and Training
Fellows participate in research and scholarly activities, including:
- Identification of a research area and mentor early in fellowship
- Significant time dedicated to a research/scholarly project
- Expectation of a scholarly product by the end of fellowship
- Opportunities for supplemental training in areas such as excellence in teaching and medical education
Application Process and Visa Information
The program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from July to October. Complete applications should include:
- ERAS application form
- At least three letters of reference, including a Program Director letter
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation/Dean's Letter
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal statement
- USMLE or COMLEX scores
- ECFMG certificate for foreign medical school graduates
Eligibility
Eligible candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited Pediatric residency and be board-eligible in pediatrics at the start of fellowship training.
