Program Overview
MCW and Children's Wisconsin Pediatric Optometry Residency Training Program
The pediatric optometry residency training program at Children's Wisconsin provides advanced clinical education in various pediatric ocular and vision problems, focusing on patient management and treatment. The residency program provides a comprehensive experience in a collaborative optometry/ophthalmology academic health center setting.
Pediatric Optometry Residency Training Program Information
This residency emphasizes pediatric primary eye care in a collaborative ophthalmology/optometry hospital-based practice.
Residents will gain advanced competence in the following areas:
- Strabismus
- Amblyopia
- Refractive error
- Common anterior and posterior segment diseases
Program Dates
The program runs from July 1 through June 30. The expected hours are Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-5 p.m., with one half day per week of administrative/scholarly time. The administrative day may also be scheduled as one full day every other week. The resident will not be required to participate in any on-call activities.
Criteria for Completion of Residency
To complete the residency, the resident must:
- Deliver clinical services at a level satisfactory to the program supervisor.
- Maintain a patient log, including information about patient age, diagnoses, and treatment plan.
- Maintain a log of their academic and scholarly activities.
- Create three scholarly works, which may include a combination of poster(s) and case report(s).
- Present at the annual Residency Day event at the University of Missouri – St. Louis College of Optometry.
- Perform in a professional manner in the delivery of patient care services.
- Attend academic lectures and case conferences as directed by the program supervisor.
- Any resident accepted for training can be dismissed for infractions of the rules and regulations or for any action that jeopardizes the safety of patients, personnel, or physical facilities.
- Upon evidence of satisfactory performance, the resident will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Program Benefits and Liability Coverage
Health benefits, vacation, and educational stipend are offered through Medical College of Wisconsin. Professional Liability Insurance is also provided for the resident. The annual stipend is $49,000.
Statement of Goals
The goals of the program are to:
- Strengthen the resident's expertise in management of pediatric vision problems and common ocular disease.
- Enhance the resident's examination skills in pediatric patients.
- Develop the resident's appreciation for scholarly activity.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes:
Clinical:
- Exposure to a wide variety of cases, including high complexity
- Opportunity to co-manage with various specialists
Academic and Didactic:
- Attend pediatric and other topical lectures
- Attend weekly case conference
- Weekly article/journal discussion with faculty
Scholarly:
- Expected to complete 3 scholarly works
- Expected to present at Residency Day at UMSL College of Optometry
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Have graduated from an ACOE accredited school or college of optometry
- Have passed all parts of NBEO, including TMOD
- Have a Wisconsin optometry license upon matriculation
Resident Application Procedures
Applications are submitted through OR Match. The selection procedure includes participation in the OR Match, submission of required documents, and an interview.

Pediatric optometry residents will rotate through three eye clinic locations:

- Children's Wisconsin New Berlin Clinic
- Children's Wisconsin Mequon Clinic
