Introduction to the Teacher Degree Apprenticeship in Secondary Mathematics Education (QTS) BSc (Hons)

The Teacher Degree Apprenticeship in Secondary Mathematics Education is a four-year course that enables students to study degree-level mathematics and the teaching and learning of maths while working at a school as a teaching assistant or cover supervisor. This apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching mathematics at the secondary level.

Program Structure

• The course is delivered entirely online, utilizing high production-value interactive learning content.
• Students will study for two days per week and work for three days per week.
• The teaching responsibilities in school will build over time, taking into account any prior teaching experience.

Course Content

The course is organized into three types of modules:

1. General aspects of becoming a teacher, such as learning theory, curriculum construction, and supporting learners with diverse backgrounds and needs.
2. Specific aspects of learning and teaching mathematics.
3. Mathematical studies covering subjects such as calculus, algorithms, and computational mathematics.

Core Modules

The core modules include:

• The Professional Teacher: Introduction to education and the role of a teacher.
• Lesson Design: Principles of effective lesson design with applications to teaching mathematics.
• Foundations in Core Mathematics: Key mathematical skills required throughout the course.
• Calculus: Comprehensive grounding in calculus, including differentiation and integration.
• Numbers, Sets, and Analysis: Recognition of structures and axioms that have developed our understanding of mathematics.
• Professional Portfolio: Record of the student's developing professional practice.

Assessment and Evaluation

• Modules with a mathematical focus are assessed via coursework and exams.
• Modules with an educational focus are assessed through assignments and academic presentations.
• Apprentices will be asked to consider and evidence their developing understanding of secondary mathematics, current educational issues, and professional expectations.

Entry Requirements

UK Students

• 120 UCAS points from up to four qualifications, including a level 3 qualification in Mathematics.
• GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or equivalent.
• Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements will be considered subject to experience and academic assessment.

International Students

• 120 UCAS points from up to four qualifications, including a level 3 qualification in Mathematics.
• GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or equivalent.
• Must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for at least the previous 3-year period.

Fees and Funding

• The employer pays the tuition fees for the apprenticeship.
• Additional costs may include textbooks, library books, printing, and photocopying.

• Successful completion of the apprenticeship will meet the education requirements for recommendation for the award of QTS.
