Introduction to Games Design - London BSc (Hons)

The Games Design - London BSc (Hons) course is delivered at the London Campus in Whitechapel. About this Course

This course will equip students with the necessary skills in game production, programming, and design, preparing them for a successful career in the ever-changing gaming industry. Students will work with games art and visual effects art students to add visual appeal and will program Blueprint games. They will develop the digital toolset, technical invention, and contextual knowledge to create stimulating and fun games.


What You'll Study

Students will study the following core modules and have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules, including Character Ideation, Interactive Narrative, and Tabletop Game Development. The course includes a School-wide, sector-leading CoLab module, where students will work in mixed teams on a project to generate solutions to a challenge or brief, exploring how creativity can make an impact in society.


Core Modules

Year One

  • Games Studies: Explore the history of game playing and associated game theory, and delve into the present-day impact of electronic gaming.
  • Introducing Gameplay: Learn about the principles of gameplay and game mechanics, level design, and game genre design principles.
  • Introducing 3D Digital Art: Gain skills and knowledge needed to create digital models and designs.
  • Programming Gameplay: Introduction to the fundamentals of system design and event programming.

Year Two

  • System and Level Design: Apply knowledge and understanding of fundamental theories and concepts required for system and level design.
  • Games Design Studio: Work on projects to bring game ideas to life, collaborating with students from Games Art and other disciplines.
  • Co Lab: Research, Exploration and Risk-taking: Participate in team-based problem-solving, working on a project that explores how creativity can make an impact in society.

Optional Modules

  • Character Ideation: Explore character creation through traditional and experimental methods.
  • Interactive Narrative: Complete the entire interactive narrative workflow, from pre-visualisation and production to distribution.
  • Tabletop Game Development: Analyse existing games, develop and test a concept, and produce a working prototype.

Placement Year Routes

  • Optional Placement Year (Sandwich): Undertake a placement year, with the chance to gain an additional Diploma or Certificate in Professional Practice.
  • Study Abroad: Study abroad for a full academic year or a semester during Year Three, earning a standalone award, such as an International Study Certificate or Diploma.
