Program Overview


Introduction to CAD for Interior and Spatial Design

The CAD for Interior and Spatial Design course is a short program designed to provide participants with technical skills related to interior design and the application of computer-aided design (CAD) within the profession. This course is ideal for enhancing existing interior design skills or for those new to CAD who want to add valuable knowledge to their work and CV.

What You'll Study

By the end of this course, participants will have the skills and confidence to use design software in a creative way. Specifically, you will:


  • Learn how to survey an existing space: what to measure, what to photograph, and how to record information from a site
  • Complete a survey
  • Be introduced to AutoCAD to draw 2D plans
  • Be introduced to SketchUp to create 3D models
  • Learn how to convert 2D information into 3D visuals
  • Be introduced to Photoshop and learn how to render 3D visuals to present your ideas to a professional standard

How You're Taught

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University's city campus. Participants will receive 12.5 contact hours of quality tuition with an experienced tutor. The course promotes a design community culture, encouraging discussion, collaboration, and experimentation. With a limited class size, participants will have the one-to-one attention needed to ensure they leave with the skills to continue developing their designs at home or work.


Tutor Profile

The course tutor, Joey Liu, has a BA and MA from NTU and has experience as a part-time lecturer in interior architecture. Currently working as an interior designer, Joey offers practical insight and strong software skills for interior design.


Campus and Facilities

Participants will be based in the School of Architecture, Design, and Built Environment on the City Campus, working in spacious IT suites equipped with industry-standard software, including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Adobe Creative Cloud. Access to the university library is also provided for research and referencing purposes.


Entry Requirements

  • Level: Beginner
  • Entry Requirement: No software experience is required, although basic computer skills and familiarity with Windows operating systems and file management are necessary.
  • Participants should have some level of professional or academic experience in interior design or have attended the Interior Design for Beginners course.
  • Age Requirement: Participants must be over the age of 18 to attend this course.

Fees and Funding

  • Course Fee: 」495
  • The fee covers the cost of studies, including most materials to create designs and benefits such as the use of the modern library and free use of IT equipment and software on the campus during the course.
  • Participants are required to bring specific materials to the first session, including a 5-meter tape measure, an A3 sketch pad or A3 loose paper, various colored pens, a pencil and eraser, and a USB stick to save work.

Certificate of Attendance

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
