Program Overview

Program Details

The Added Secondary program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively teach an additional subject area. The program operates on a quarter system and is held in person, with methods classes conducted on campus during the fall term.

Curriculum

Students in this program will engage in coursework designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively teach an additional subject area. Emphasis is placed on research-based instructional strategies, as well as effective planning, implementation, and assessment techniques. In addition to the coursework, students will complete a 3-credit practicum in a secondary classroom, gaining hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

Course Descriptions

For full course descriptions, please consult the Bulletin or Class Schedule.

Program Format

  • Modality: In-Person
  • Part-time: Time to completion is two terms (fall and winter)
  • Scheduling: Methods classes are held in the evening once a week, and the experiential learning component in the winter term requires daytime hours in a secondary (grades 612) education setting

Weekly Estimated Time Commitment

The PSU Credit Hour Policy defines 1 credit hour as requiring a minimum of 3 hours of student time per week over the course of the term. Students in this program take 3 credits during the fall term and should expect to spend at least 6 hours per week outside of classroom time on homework and related activities. During the winter term, students engage in experiential learning through a practicum, which takes additional time to complete. Generally, a practicum requires 90 hours per term, which is approximately 10 hours per week.

Program of Study

The program operates as a cohort model, meaning that students follow a set program of study with a group of peers, learning together and providing a peer-support network. The program of study is as follows:

  • Fall: Methodology course (3 credits)
  • Winter: ITP 509 Practicum (3 credits)

Practicum Information

Practicum is completed in the winter term. To begin practicum, students should apply for Field Placement by October 15th. Failure to complete this application by October 15th may result in PSU not being able to find an appropriate placement and supervisor.

Program Completion

Once students have finished all of the added endorsement program's requirements (coursework, test, practicum), they should follow all steps of the instructions for adding an endorsement. Students must complete all program requirements before beginning the instructions for adding an endorsement.
