Program Overview

Underwater Acoustics Undergraduate Certificate

The Underwater Acoustics Undergraduate Certificate program is designed to combine broad engineering disciplines with knowledge of engineering principles specific to underwater acoustics. This program supports preparing students to work at companies and government agencies specializing in underwater acoustics. The certificate requires satisfactory completion of five 3-credit hour courses.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must meet the following requirements:

• A bachelor's degree in a related field of engineering.
• A GPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent.
• Satisfactory completion of all the prerequisites for each course in the program.

Required Courses

The following five courses are required for the certificate and must be completed with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Additional courses may be counted with the approval of the advisor.

Course Requirements

The required courses are:

• EOC 3306: Acoustics for OE (3 credits)
• EOC 4307C: Underwater Acoustics (3 credits)
• Select one of the following courses:
  • EOC 4804: RI: OE Systems Control & Design (3 credits)
  • EGN 4915: Directed Independent Research (3 credits)
  • EOC 4905: Directed Independent Study (3 credits)
• Elective Courses: Select two of the following courses:
  • EOC 4124: Ship Hydrodynamics (3 credits)
  • EOC 4412: Ocean Structures (3 credits)
  • EOC 4620: Intro to Ocean Instrumentation (3 credits)
  • EGN 4670C: Innovating Sensing and Actuation Tech (3 credits)
  • EGM 4350: Finite Element Analysis (3 credits)
