Maîtrise en Communication

The Maîtrise en Communication is a graduate program offered by the Université de Sherbrooke, Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences.


Presentation

The program allows students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the development of personal and critical research in communication. It offers several specializations, including a research-oriented path and course-based paths in strategic communication, international strategic communication, and political international communication and democratic risks.


Objectives

The general objectives of the program are to enable students to:


  • Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the development of personal and critical research in communication
  • Master theoretical and methodological tools and acquire theoretical, historical, and analytical knowledge to discern and analyze complex and contemporary communication issues
  • Situate their research object in a critical perspective in relation to the historical evolution and dynamics of the communication world
  • Explicitly inscribe their reflections in an ethical perspective

Specific Objectives

Each specialization has specific objectives:


  • Research-oriented path: Acquire the skills necessary to conduct original and exhaustive scientific research on a contemporary communication issue, develop the skills necessary for a systematic, synthetic, and dynamic presentation of research results, and specialize in a research area.
  • Course-based path in Strategic Communication: Analyze complex communication problems in a professional context, work collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team, increase capacity for strategic decision-making and problem-solving in a communication context, and deploy methodological tools to capture and analyze these phenomena.
  • Course-based path in International Strategic Communication: Analyze complex communication problems of organizations in an international perspective, work collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team and various stakeholders in the academic and professional communication environment, increase capacity for strategic decision-making and problem-solving in an international context, and deploy methodological tools to capture and analyze these phenomena.
  • Course-based path in Political International Communication and Democratic Risks: Analyze complex political communication and public information issues in an international and multi-situated perspective, understand international transformations of political behaviors and democratic risks, work collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team and various stakeholders in the academic and professional communication environment, and deploy methodological tools to capture and analyze these phenomena.

Structure of the Program

The program consists of several specializations with different structures:


  • Research-oriented path: 18 credits of compulsory pedagogical activities and 27 credits of optional pedagogical activities.
  • Course-based path in Strategic Communication: 27 credits of compulsory pedagogical activities and 18 credits of optional pedagogical activities.
  • Course-based path in International Strategic Communication: 36 credits of compulsory pedagogical activities and 9 credits of optional pedagogical activities.
  • Course-based path in Political International Communication and Democratic Risks: 27 credits of compulsory pedagogical activities and 18 credits of optional pedagogical activities.

Admission and Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must:


  • Hold a bachelor's degree in communication or an equivalent degree
  • Have a cumulative average of at least 3.0
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the French language
  • Provide two letters of recommendation and a letter of motivation
  • For international students, provide proof of language proficiency in French
