Training Objectives

  • Understand and master the knowledge related to the biological phenomena underlying the mammary gland
  • Synthesize knowledge in cell biology, cell differentiation, physiology, endocrinology, and biochemistry
  • Be able to analyze a biological function considering both fundamental and applied aspects
  • Initiate research through learning the methodology underlying a bibliographic search

Content

  • Anatomy and histological structures of the breast
  • Growth of the breast: hormonal controls of development; influence of dietary and environmental factors on breast growth
  • Cell biology and modification of metabolism leading to milk secretion; hormonal controls of lactogenesis; biochemical synthesis of milk components; factors influencing milk composition and production
  • Storage function of the mammary gland; neuro-endocrine reflex of milk letdown; discharge of galactopoietic hormones and role of the nervous system; behavior during breastfeeding; hygiene, sanitation of milk, and breast health
  • Milk collection; nutritional value of milk; biological properties of proteins and other peptide components of milk; immunoglobulins; uses of milk in the agri-food sector
  • Lactation in women: breastfeeding of newborns; breast cancer; oncogenes
  • Literature review and writing of a paper on a specific aspect of the mammary gland
