Program Overview

The African Insights program is a Short Learning Programme designed to provide participants with an appreciation of Africa, including its riches, inheritances, and great ideas and knowledge systems.


Description

By completing African Insights, participants will have conceptual tools to think more critically about the issues of contemporary significance to Africa, and will have interacted with some of the many African thinkers and writers through their texts.


Admission Requirements

  • Participants must be 18 years and older.
  • Participants must have access to an internet-enabled device.
  • Participants must communicate clearly in English.
  • No prior knowledge of the topic is required.

Course Curriculum

The program consists of 7 units:


  • Unit 1: Africa: An immense continent, which helps participants appreciate Africa's diversity and complexity.
  • Unit 2: Movements across Africa over time: People and places, which explores the movements of people across the continent and their impact on thinking and experiences.
  • Unit 3: A question of language(s), which celebrates the diversity and richness of languages across Africa and explores their influence on identity and culture.
  • Unit 4: Resistance and cultural renaissance, which examines the agency of Africans in enabling their own experiences and reimagining their futures despite structural constraints.
  • Unit 5: Africa's women, which explores the struggles, policy victories, and achievements of African women in society.
  • Unit 6: African sexualities, which invites participants to learn about the diversity of African sexualities and the struggles of sexual minorities for recognition.
  • Unit 7: African futures, which considers Africa's way forward as expressed by African writers and thinkers.
