Program Overview

The Nurse Midwifery MSN Online Program is a two-year program offered jointly with Shenandoah University in northern Virginia. This program is designed to prepare students for a career in nurse midwifery, with a focus on caring for the health of women and newborn infants.


Program Details

  • The program requires a minimum of 52 credit hours, including clinicals.
  • Students will take advanced practice nursing courses online from Old Dominion University (ODU) for the first year.
  • In the second year, students will take online courses in the Nurse-Midwifery program at Shenandoah University.
  • Clinical work will be completed in the student's local community.
  • The program follows an accelerated 8-week schedule for ODU's online courses and a standard 16-week semester schedule for Shenandoah's online courses.

Admission Requirements

  • A current license as a registered nurse is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in nursing from a NLNAC or CCNE accredited program or in a related field is required.
  • One year of recent clinical nursing experience (preferably after receiving the bachelor's degree) is preferred.

Cost and Aid

  • The cost per credit hour for in-state Virginia residents is $486.
  • The cost per credit hour for out-of-state students is $649.
  • Rates are effective Fall 2025 and are subject to change.
  • Scholarships and aid are available to support students in achieving their academic and career goals.
