Geographic Information Science (Certificate) Military Pathway

The Geographic Information Science (Certificate) Military Pathway is an undergraduate certificate program designed for military students. This program outlines degree requirements that may be satisfied by military training and experience or exams, as well as requirements that must be satisfied through courses taken at Old Dominion University.


Military Pathway Information

This military pathway provides an opportunity for military students to earn a certificate in Geographic Information Science. The program requirements include core and developmental requirements that can be met through a combination of military experience, exams, and coursework.


Core Requirements

The core requirements for the program include:


  • GEOG 300 Maps and Geographic Information (3 credits)
  • GEOG 402 Geographic Information Systems (3 credits)
  • GEOG 404 Digital Techniques for Remote Sensing (3 credits)

These requirements can be met through select military specialties or by taking the equivalent courses at Old Dominion University.


Developmental Requirements

The developmental requirements for the program include:


  • GEOG 432 Advanced GIS (3 credits)
  • GEOG 462 Advanced Spatial Analysis (3 credits)
  • GEOG 473 Geographic Information Systems for Emergency Management (3 credits)

These requirements can also be met through select military specialties or by taking the equivalent courses at Old Dominion University.

Prior Learning Credit

Prior learning credit is also available in specific situations at a cost of 20-50% of the current tuition rate. Prior learning credit may not be paid for by military tuition assistance (TA) and cannot exceed 60 credit hours.
