Program Overview
MSc Hydrography
Hydrography is crucial to the sustainable management of marine environments. Yet there is an international shortage of hydrographic surveyors, data processors and analysts, during a period when technology is rapidly advancing.
Program Overview
The MSc Hydrography program provides a thorough knowledge of the science and technology of hydrography, experiencing the practical application of modern methods and equipment involved in exploring and managing the seabed whilst preparing for a career in this growth area.
Course Structure
The program includes modules such as:
- MAR520 Hydrography: Establishes the foundations of hydrography in terms of fundamental concepts related to positioning, surveying, surveying in the marine environment, basic data processing and rigorous communication of information.
- MAR522 Survey Project Management: Teaches how to manage (plan, prepare, undertake, process and document) a real-world multibeam survey project to a professional standard.
- MAR517 Coastal Erosion and Protection: Introduces waves and coastal processes, as well as the hard and soft engineering methods used in coastal protection.
Research Opportunities
The program offers research opportunities, including a research project and dissertation. For example, one possible topic is "Ping DSP Evaluation of shallow water bathymetry and object detection capability", which seeks to evaluate the performance gains and losses of the Ping DSP compared to traditional industry-grade multibeam and side-scan systems for shallow water surveys.
Career Prospects
The program prepares students for a career in hydrography, with opportunities to work in industries such as offshore oil and gas, renewable energy, and marine conservation. Students can also pursue further research opportunities, such as a PhD, to continue advancing their knowledge and skills in the field.
Student Experience
Plymouth is a serene city with friendly people, offering a great student experience with facilities such as parks and gardens for relaxation and hiking. The university provides a range of support services, including orientation sessions and welcome packages, to help students settle into campus life. Students can also attend meetings and workshops of professional organizations, such as the South West Branch of The Hydrographic Society of UK & Ireland, to network with professionals in the field.
