Introduction to the FdSc Sport: Coaching, Health and Fitness Program

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Sport, Health and Physical Activity Organisations: This module considers the different organisations responsible for or interested in the provision of sports and physical activities to the general public.
  • Human Performance in Sports: This module informs students about how the body functions in sport and exercise conditions, focusing on physiological, biomechanical, and psychological aspects of performance.
  • Sports Coaching: This module informs students of the theoretical principles required in organising coaching sessions in a range of sports.
  • Health and Fitness Principles: This module considers the causes and non-medical treatments or preventions for conditions such as obesity, CHD, cancer, osteoporosis, etc.
  • Developing Graduate Skills: This module enables students to demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for academic work and employment requiring responsibility and decision-making.
  • Maintaining Personal Health: This module is designed to enable students to understand the importance of maintaining personal health.

Final Year Core Modules

  • Health Promotion and Lifestyle Wellbeing: This module allows students to explore the relationship between lifestyle and health.
  • Further Principles of Sports Coaching: This module develops the principles and expertise gained in the first year, providing further opportunities for students to develop coaching abilities.
  • Inclusive Activity for All: This module allows students to consider the needs of particular client groups in the context of sports and activity provision and exercise prescription.
  • Research Methods: This module introduces students to formal methods of research and data gathering, requiring the completion of a research project.
  • Health and Activity for Young People: This module investigates particular health issues affecting young people, such as obesity, and how these can be addressed through activity or nutritional-based interventions.

Optional Modules

  • Exercise Prescription and Behaviour Change: This module examines the benefits of the GP referral scheme and the role of the exercise provider, as well as formulating exercise plans for sufferers of various conditions.
  • Event Management: This module enables students to investigate the theory behind organising large and small-scale events and gain practical experience in organising local community-based events.
