Program Overview

Introduction to the FdSc Computer Systems Development Program

The FdSc Computer Systems Development program is a three-year, part-time course offered by City College Plymouth in partnership with the University of Plymouth. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of computer systems development, including object-oriented programming, computer systems, computer networks, and database development.

Course Details

The program consists of three years of study, with each year building on the previous one to provide a solid foundation in computer systems development. The course is divided into core modules, which are designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the subject area.

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Object Oriented Programming: This module introduces students to the object-oriented programming paradigm, which is a proven method for developing reliable modular programs.
  • Computer Systems: This module provides an overview of the fundamental components that form a computer, including different types of computers and operating systems.
  • Computer Networks: This module introduces students to the fundamental technology of networks and the underlying concepts and protocols.
  • Database Development: This module focuses on the principles of relational database design, which underpin developments in other database models.

Year 2 Core Modules

  • Mathematics for Computing: This module develops students' mathematical ability and provides a foundation for computer-based algebra, transformations, numerical concepts, and relational algebra.
  • Web Development: This module gives students an introduction to developing web applications, including the fundamental components required for web development and an understanding of programming and scripting languages.
  • Organisational Systems Security: This module develops students' analytical ability and provides a foundation for computer security, including how to protect computer systems and networks against attacks.
  • Advanced Computer Networks: This module provides a deeper understanding of routing and switching, IP addressing, and designing and troubleshooting networked systems.

Final Year Core Modules

  • Computing Team Project: This practical module introduces systems engineering as a means of facilitating and assuring the development of complex computer-related technical products.
  • Digital Forensics: This module covers the use of systems to find information that links to a crime, preserving the validity of that evidence, and communicating it effectively for use in legal processes.
  • Embedded Systems And Robotics: This module covers the history of robotics and sensors, the mathematics behind them, and various types of computer platforms and devices used to control robots and embedded systems.
  • Computer Systems Architecture: This module helps learners understand the evolution of computer architecture and the factors influencing the design of hardware and software elements of computer systems.

Fees, Costs, and Funding

As this course is delivered by City College Plymouth, a partner college of the University of Plymouth, students should contact the college directly for information on fees and funding. It's worth noting that tuition fees may be subject to change based on UK Government announcements.

Studying with City College Plymouth

City College Plymouth is one of the largest colleges in the South West, offering a dynamic learning environment with a Students' Union and Student Liaison Team. The college is located just one-and-a-half miles from the University of Plymouth, making it an ideal choice for those looking to study in a supportive higher education community.

Academic Partnerships

The University of Plymouth has developed partnerships with institutions around the world to make higher education more accessible. These partnerships enable students to enroll for a degree at a partnership institution closer to home or engage in distance learning. Students benefit from a supportive learning environment, smaller class sizes, personal tuition, and dedicated tutors, along with the facilities and services provided by both the partner institution and the University of Plymouth.
