Program Overview


Introduction to FdSc Marine Autonomous Vehicles

The FdSc Marine Autonomous Vehicles course is a two-year full-time program, with a part-time route available, offered by City College Plymouth in partnership with the University of Plymouth. This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to work in the marine autonomous vehicles industry.


Course Details

Year 1

The first year of the course includes the following core modules:


  • Engineering Mathematics: Develops the student's mathematical ability and applies principles to the solution of engineering problems.
  • Engineering Science 1: Introduces mechanical principles, energy transfer, and AC electrical theory.
  • Digital and Analogue Devices and Circuits: Provides a practical understanding of digital and analogue devices and circuits in common use within Electrical/Electronic Engineering Systems.
  • Naval Architecture: Introduces the theory of ship stability and the interaction between a vessel, its cargo, and counteracting the effects.
  • Applications of Pneumatics and Hydraulics: Investigates pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams, examines the characteristics of components and equipment, and evaluates the applications of pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Object Oriented Programming: Introduces the object-oriented programming paradigm, requiring a programmer to design and develop code by considering what objects may exist in some system, how these are related to each other, and how these may interact with each other.

Final Year

The final year of the course includes the following core modules:


  • Industrial Control and Mechatronics: Introduces a multidisciplinary view of typical mechatronic systems, integrating a number of engineering disciplines.
  • Advanced CAD & FEA: Develops 3D modelling techniques, surface and solid modelling within a dedicated 3D modelling package, and creates 3D visualisation and animations to communicate design concepts.
  • Composites Materials for the Marine Industry: Explores the use of composite materials in the marine industry.
  • Project: An integration of the skills and knowledge developed in other modules of the course within a major piece of work.
  • Fluid mechanics and CFD: Considers fundamental concepts of fluid static, continuity, viscosity, and flow, and provides the working principle of hydraulic systems and machinery.
  • Software Development: Explores the principles and techniques of software development, acquiring an understanding of analysis, design, software construction, and testing.
