Program Overview

The Patient Management in Terrorist Incidents (ADV771) module is designed to develop comprehensive and systematic knowledge in key aspects of patient care provision within a terrorist situation. This module enables Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) professionals to critically appraise and discuss the evidence base around patient management during terrorist incidents.

Marauding Terrorist Firearms Attack (MTFA) and Terrorist Sieges

  • The diverse risks and problems encountered with MTFAs / Terrorist Sieges
  • Ambulance Service responsibilities under an 'Op PLATO' incident
  • PPE, equipment, pre-deployment, and warm zone procedures for MTFAs / Terrorist Sieges
  • Actions in the event of withdrawal / evacuation if firearms are found
  • Clinical operations (triage / types of injuries / armed personnel / hostile or combative patients)
  • Deployment of military assets
  • Working alongside partner agencies
  • Related national and international legislation, policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines for MTFAs / Terrorist Sieges

CBRN Incidents

  • The diverse risks and problems encountered with CBRN incidents
  • Characteristics of CBRN materials
  • Ambulance Service responsibilities within a CBRN incident
  • PPE, equipment, pre-deployment, and warm zone procedures for CBRN incidents
  • Clinical operations (triage / types of injuries)
  • Challenges of CBRN environments
  • Working alongside partner agencies
  • Related national and international legislation, policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines for CBRN incidents

Module Dates

This module will not run in 2023/24. Occasionally, delivery dates might be subject to change – always check with the module lead or Professional Development Unit.


Entry Requirements

  • Normally, a healthcare professional with a first degree or a related academic degree
  • BSc (Hons) at 2:2 or above, or European first cycle equivalent
  • Clinicians without a degree but with appropriate experience may be eligible to apply
  • Overseas students require IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent
  • Evidence of attainment and / or currency of the HART / NARU Incident Response Unit (IRU) course and Marauding terrorist attacks and / or Support Security Operations or alternative qualifications deemed as demonstrating similar assessed learning outcomes
