Quality Management and Safety Engineering Program

The Quality Management and Safety Engineering program is a ten-credit module, previously known as MST324 until AY2005/06. This module is part of the BSc Marine Sports Technology (UCAS code J601 - until AY 2007/08) and BSc Surf Science and Technology (UCAS code C6J6 - until AY 2004/05) programs.

• Lecture 1: Introduction, definitions of quality, and the gurus of quality
• Lecture 2: Basic statistics, statistical process control (SPC), control charts, six-sigma, quality circles, kaizen, and poka-yoke
• Lecture 3: Problem-solving techniques, including brainstorming, mind maps, cause-and-effect diagrams, FMEA, FTA, and DOE
• Lecture 4: Quality management systems (ISO 9000) and quality function deployment (QFD)
• Lecture 5: Concern for the environment, sustainability, environmental management systems (ISO 14000), polluter pays principle, precautionary principle, and life cycle assessment
• Lecture 6: Occupational health and safety management systems (BS 8800/OHSAS 18001), COSHH, CHIP, RoHS, and risk assessment
• Lecture 7: Project planning (Gantt, PERT/CPM) and technology road maps (TRM)
• Lecture 8: Event management, budget uncertainties, insurance against risks
• Lecture 9: Product liability, CE marking, recreational craft directive (RCD), and classification societies
• Lecture 10: Learning styles (Honey and Mumford), team roles (Belbin), organizational culture, and change management
• Lecture 11: Revision tutorial
