Program Overview
Introduction to the First-year Research Immersion Program
The First-year Research Immersion (FRI) program at Binghamton University is designed to provide all students, regardless of their research experience, with the opportunity to engage in scientific research from their first year. This program is based on the belief that scientific research should be accessible to everyone.
Undergraduate Research
The FRI program allows students to become part of a collaborative community of first-year researchers investigating critical social, environmental, technological, and health challenges. These challenges impact people locally, nationally, and globally. The program caters to a wide range of interests, including genes, molecules, cells, circuits, physiology, behavior, and ecology, by offering various research streams.
Research Streams
The available research streams include:
- Biogeochemistry
- Biomedical Chemistry
- Clean Energy
- Drug Discovery
- Ecological Genetics
- Environmental Visualization with Drones
- Image and Acoustic Signals Analysis
- Microbial Biofilms in Human Health
- Molecular and Biomedical Anthropology
- Neuroscience
- Public Health
Program Structure
The FRI program is a three-semester sequence that begins with a Research Methods Seminar in the fall of the first year. This seminar is followed by two research stream courses. In these courses, students learn research techniques, acquire background knowledge on a research question, and initiate the phases of a research problem.
FRI Research Stream Labs
Each FRI research stream has a newly renovated and dedicated lab equipped with research-grade equipment and supplies. These labs provide students with hands-on experience and the opportunity to work on real research projects.
Research Stream Overview
Each research stream offers an overview of the conducted research and possible projects that students can engage in. This information helps students choose the research stream that best aligns with their interests and career goals.
Events and Opportunities
The FRI program hosts various events, including the FRI Research Stream Fair and lab tours, which provide admitted students with the opportunity to learn about the program, meet with faculty and staff, and visit the research labs. These events are designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the program and its offerings.
Conclusion
The First-year Research Immersion program at Binghamton University offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in research from their first year. With its diverse range of research streams and state-of-the-art facilities, the program provides students with a comprehensive research experience that prepares them for their future careers.
