Binghamton University Social Work Program
Overview
Binghamton University offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) program, including an advanced standing option for graduates of undergraduate social work programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Advanced Standing Curriculum
The advanced standing program is designed for students who have earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree within the last seven years. To be eligible, students must demonstrate that they received comparable educational content in their BSW courses and achieved grades of "B" or better.
Credit Transfer
Advanced standing students may be given credit for up to 29 credits of coursework, including:
- SW 503: Diversity and Oppression
- SW 504: Foundations of Scientific Inquiry with Social Systems
- SW 505: Human Behavior in the Social Environment
- SW 510: Generalist Practice I
- SW 511: Generalist Practice II
- SW 512: Generalist Practice III
- SW 515: Social Welfare Policy and Programs
- SW 591: Field Instruction I
- SW 592: Field Instruction II
Application Process
Students requesting advanced standing status must submit syllabi for the courses they believe have similar content to those listed above. The Director of Admissions and Student Services will review the syllabi and make decisions about granting advanced standing credit. Students seeking credit for SW 591 and SW 592 must submit copies of their field evaluations to the Director of Field Education.
Program Requirements
All advanced standing students participate in SW 575: Advanced Standing Seminar the summer prior to beginning the Binghamton University MSW program.
