Introduction to the Double Degree Program
The Double Degree in Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention and Public Administration is a unique program offered by Binghamton University. This program combines the Master of Science in Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (MS in GMAP) with the Master of Public Administration (MPA).
Program Overview
The MS in GMAP is housed within the university-wide Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, while the MPA program is housed within the College of Community and Public Affairs. Both degrees are considered professional terminal degrees. By structuring the sequence of courses and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students can complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.
Program Objectives
The double degree program prepares students for administrative positions that focus on atrocity prevention. The program covers topics such as:
- Analyzing risk factors
- Formulating strategies
- Implementing policies and practices to reduce the occurrence, severity, and potential for recurrence of genocides and other mass atrocities around the world
Program Components
The MS in GMAP program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and address genocides and mass atrocities. The MPA program, on the other hand, provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for management in the public and nonprofit sectors.
Degree Completion
The double degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study. This is achieved by carefully structuring the sequence of courses and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other.
