About Program
Program Overview
Introduction to Tropical Marine Biology
The Tropical Marine Biology program at Murdoch University is a short intensive course that covers three main areas: the diversity and physical processes of Western Australia's marine habitats, coral reef environments and the biodiversity of reef organisms, and biological processes with a focus on coral reef ecosystems.
Program Details
- The course is suitable for undergraduate students who have completed at least two classes of animal or plant biology, with a focus on ecology.
- Students without this background can start in the February intake, complete the required two prerequisite classes (Marine Botany and Marine Ecology), and qualify to complete the Tropical Marine Biology program in June.
- The program runs over June and July, with a 10-day intensive field camp, 15 hours of theory classes, two laboratory classes and computer workshops, and one tutorial.
- The course is assessed by tutorial participation, theory examination, group presentations, and final project reports.
Field Trip to Ningaloo Reef
- The field trip is a key component of the program, where students visit the Ningaloo Marine Park, located 1100km north of Perth.
- The marine park is home to over 200 species of hard corals, 500 species of fish, 650 species of molluscs, plus turtles and manta rays.
- Students can snorkel, scuba dive, or explore the reef by tour, and participate in a wildlife interaction cruise with snorkelling activities on the reef.
Cost and Inclusions
- The 2026 indicative cost is A$8,760.
- The cost includes airport pick-up, 15 nights' accommodation at the Murdoch University Student Village, return transfer to Coral Bay, 10-day field trip, accommodation during the field camp, all food while away in Coral Bay, glass bottom boat tour, charter boat wildlife cruise, whale watching cruise (subject to conditions), and snorkelling trip and equipment (if required).

- Places are limited, with high demand.
- The application deadline is 15 March 2026, with an acceptance deadline of 15 April 2026 to secure a place.
