Graduate Diploma in Infectious Disease

Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Infectious Disease provides science graduates with professional training in current and emerging infectious diseases science from nationally and internationally recognised experts. The course emphasises hands-on experience with cutting-edge laboratory equipment, as well as the collection, processing, and interpretation of data collected. These skills will enable students to develop microbiological laboratory skills that can be applied across fields including health, environment, food production and safety, agriculture, and water management.

Admission Requirements

• Enrolment restrictions: All graduate courses are subject to restriction.
• Entry requirements (onshore):
  • Bachelor of Science in a cognate discipline (AQF Level 7).
  • Other AQF Level 7 qualifications will be considered if they are broadly relevant to infectious diseases science and contain units in biological or chemical sciences, at the discretion of the Academic Chair.
  • Successful completion of the requirements for C1173 (Graduate Certificate in Infectious Diseases).
• English language requirements: Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an advanced and comprehensive understanding of infectious disease, including the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, considering the interactions between pathogens and host organisms.
2. Exhibit proficiency in conventional and high-throughput diagnostic laboratory techniques relevant to the field of infectious diseases.
3. Systematically troubleshoot diagnostic and bioinformatic methodologies to isolate and address equipment/software issues effectively.
4. Demonstrate a knowledge base and advanced skills to accurately identify bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal pathogens.
5. Identify key prevention and control methods of infectious diseases agents. Interpret data with the use of bioinformatic tools used in the analysis of infectious agents.
6. Reflect on cultural diversity and demonstrate effective, ethical teamwork and collaboration with diverse professional teams.
