Graduate Diploma in Asian Language (In-Country)

Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Asian Language offers opportunities to study the literature, media, religion, history, politics, economics, sociology, and anthropology of Japan or Indonesia in the relevant language while enrolled in a university in the selected country. Study is undertaken in an immersive, in-country environment, allowing students to develop advanced language skills, personal and professional networks, and experiential knowledge of the region.

Admission Requirements

• Enrolment restrictions: All graduate courses are subject to restriction.
• Special requirements: This course requires the student to complete at least one semester of study at a university in Asia while residing in Asia.
• Entry requirements (onshore): AQF Level 7 (Bachelors) degree with 3 years of study in the relevant Asian language, or equivalent.
• English language requirements: Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
• Additional progression requirements/restrictions: Commonwealth Supported Places are available for this course, though with a restricted choice of units. Commonwealth fee support is contingent on a student taking no more than 50% (that is, 12 credit points) of the units offshore. Students are required to pay full fees for the remainder of this course when and if international, in-country units exceed 50% of the enrolled credit points.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate linguistic competence in an Asian language, including advanced verbal and written skills.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of the social, cultural, political, professional, and other contexts relevant to Asian languages.
3. Explore practices and methodologies relevant to a range of cultural, social, and political Asian language contexts.
4. Articulate complex ideas, questions, and interpretations in an Asian language.
5. Communicate effectively in authentic Asian language contexts.

Structure

The course consists of 24 credit points.

• Core (12 credit points): Students are to choose ONE Core unit in line with Option 1 or Option 2.

• Specified Electives (12 credit points):
  • Option 1 Indonesian (12 credit points): Students can choose any Specified Elective units up to a value of 12 credit points.
