Doctor of Education

The Doctor of Education is an intensive course of study leading to the professional doctorate degree in Education. It consists of coursework and applied research leading to a dissertation. The purpose of the degree is to provide advanced level study in Education at a high degree of specialisation through applied research in a selected area of practice.

Overview

On entry to the EdD, each candidate will be assigned a supervisor who will assist in the development of an approved plan of study appropriate to the intended specialisation. For this course, on-campus meetings are available through negotiation. The Doctor of Education (EdD) must successfully complete 24 credit points of graduate coursework and a research thesis of 48 credit points.

Admission Requirements

Advanced academic study, research preparation, and professional experience are required for admission to the course. To be eligible for admission as a candidate for a Doctoral Degree (Professional), an applicant must have:

• A Bachelor Degree with at least a 2A Honours normally in the same discipline (AQF level 8)
• A Masters Degree normally in the same discipline (AQF level 9)
• A Bachelor Degree normally in the same discipline (AQF level 7) and satisfy the Dean of Graduate Studies with evidence of substantive and significant scholarly or professional attainments including satisfactory research preparation the equivalent of AQF level 8 or 9

English Language Requirements

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.

Additional Progression Requirements/Restrictions

In order to progress to the dissertation component of this degree, students must achieve the prescribed credit points for the coursework component and a minimum of 65% in EDN701, or obtain the permission of the Academic Chair. The timeframe for submission of Program of Study for Confirmation of Candidature for Murdoch University's Doctor of Education must be six months after commencement of dissertation; the part-time equivalent is double the timeframe as set out above.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop an advanced level applied research dissertation in a selected area of practice that provides a critical analysis of the topic under consideration and demonstrates an understanding of the theory and practice of educational research
2. Design studies incorporating qualitative and/or quantitative data sources and analysis techniques
3. Use and critically analyse a range of research methodologies
4. Place their research study into a larger intellectual context and develop a research network and program
