MJ-INDA - Indonesian Major
Overview
The Indonesian Major is designed to provide students with advanced skills in the Indonesian language. This major, which is available for beginners and those with some knowledge of the language, consists of three years of interactive Indonesian language study including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural understanding. Indonesia is a dynamic and rapidly industrialising region of tremendous cultural, economic, and political importance to Australia.
Structure
The major requires 24 credit points, consisting of:
- Required Units: 12 credit points
- IND101: Indonesian 1 (3 cp)
- IND102: Indonesian 2 (3 cp)
- IND201: Indonesian 3 (3 cp)
- IND202: Indonesian 4 (3 cp)
- Elective Units: 12 credit points
- Students complete 12cp of the following:
- AST281: Contemporary Asia: Media, Politics and Popular Culture (3 cp)
- AST384: Asian Studies Project (3 cp)
- IND301: Indonesian 5 (3 cp)
- IND302: Indonesian 6 (3 cp)
- IND243: Semester in Indonesia 1 (12 cp)
- IND244: Semester in Indonesia 2 (12 cp)
- ART3041: In-Country Studies Indonesia (12 cp)
- ART304: In-Country Studies Indonesia (6 cp)

Admission Requirements
Inherent Requirements
Capability to participate in interactive language learning with oral, aural, reading, and writing exercises.
Special Requirements
The course is open to beginners as well as those with language competency based on previous study. Students with language competency will be granted exemption (preclusion) from lower-level language units and will be placed at the level of study appropriate to their level of competence.
Entry Requirements (Onshore)
As per normal undergraduate admission requirements.
English Language Requirements
Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Learning Outcomes
- Evaluate the cultural role and function of Indonesian language in Indonesian society.
- Demonstrate understandings of how the Indonesian language is used in a range of social, professional, and other contexts.
- Evaluate competing sources of knowledge and apply discipline-appropriate research methods to analyse complex social, cultural, political, religious, sustainability, development, and/or other issues that affect Indonesia and its place in the world.
- Speak proficiently in the Indonesian language, correctly applying linguistic and grammatical principles to suit a range of social, professional, and academic settings.
- Accurately read and write Indonesian-language texts that are intended for general or professional readers.
- Design and manage projects of increasing sophistication, involving ethical inquiry, and working independently and with others.
- Demonstrate capacity for cross-cultural communication within Australian and Indonesian contexts.
- Develop interpersonal, ethical, cross-cultural, and other skills that are valued in government, trade, education, law, technology, industry, media, marketing, and other professional contexts.
Professional Outcomes
Professional Recognition
Some employers (e.g., Departments of Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Trade) pay additional salary loadings for high levels of Indonesian language competence.
Professional Accreditation
It is possible to gain accreditation as an interpreter and translator through separate application and testing by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters).
Other Information
Indonesian language skills are highly valued in particular employment areas, particularly in foreign affairs, security, defence, media, international development, and teaching and education.
