Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Use descriptive techniques to summarize and interpret data;
  2. Apply probability concepts relating to diagnostic testing and sampling distributions;
  3. Apply hypothesis testing and interval estimation to diverse types of data;
  4. Recognize the relative statistical quality of data;
  5. Assess the extent to which statistical analyses may (or may not) be valid;
  6. Perform statistical analyses using computer software;
  7. Communicate the content and conclusions of basic statistical analyses.

Unit Content

This unit covers the following topics:

  • Good-quality data collection: The underlying ideas on sampling and processes to support good quality data collection.
  • Descriptive statistics: types of data; numerical and graphical description of data; comparing data in multiple groups; describing bivariate data.
  • Statistical Inference: basic inference techniques (estimations and hypothesis testing) for one mean, two means, multiple means (ANOVA) and regression analysis.
  • Misleading graphics: An introduction to how visual elements like axis manipulation, selective data presentation, and exaggerated scaling can make graphics misleading and affect data interpretation.

Additional Information

  • MAS183 assumes fluency in mathematics at about the level of Year 10 in Australian high schools.
  • Students enrolling in MAS183 are invited to do a Maths Diagnostic Quiz which will refer them to maths learning support if this may be helpful.
