Program Overview


University Program: Yup'ik Language Proficiency

The Yup'ik language proficiency program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to pursue structured study of Yup'ik in order to develop intermediate-level speaking and listening skills, as well as basic reading and writing abilities in the language.


Program Overview

The program is offered by the College of Liberal Arts, Department of Alaska Native Languages, and is available at the Kuskokwim Campus only. The program offers a Certificate and an A.A.S. Degree.


Program Requirements

Certificate Program

To complete the certificate program, students must:


  • Complete the general university requirements
  • Complete the certificate requirements, which include:
    • ESK F208: Yup'ik Composition (3 credits)
    • ESK F130: Beginning Yup'ik Grammar (3 credits)
    • ESK F240: Introduction to Reading Yup'ik (3 credits)
  • Complete one of the following sequences:
    • ESK F121: Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship I (4 credits)
    • ESK F122: Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship II (4 credits)
    • ESK F123: Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III (4 credits)
    • Alternatively, students can complete:
      • ESK F103: Conversational Central Yup'ik (3 credits)
      • ESK F104: Conversational Central Yup'ik (3 credits)
      • ESK F203: Intermediate Central Yup'ik (3 credits)
      • ESK F204: Intermediate Central Yup'ik (3 credits)
  • Complete one of the following sequences:
    • ESK F221: Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship I (3 credits)
    • ESK F222: Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship II (3 credits)
    • ESK F223: Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III (3 credits)
    • Alternatively, students can complete:
      • ESK F205: Regaining Fluency in Yup'ik (3 credits)
      • ESK F206: Regaining Fluency in Yup'ik (3 credits)
      • ESK F223: Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III (3 credits)

Degree Program

The minimum requirements for the degree program are 60 credits.


Minimum Credits Required

The minimum credits required for the certificate program are 30 credits.
