Program Overview


B.A., Foreign Languages

The B.A. in Foreign Languages is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of a foreign language and its associated culture. The program offers concentrations in Two Languages, Single Language (French, German, Russian, Spanish), and Japanese.


Concentrations

  • Two Languages: This concentration requires students to complete 30-33 credits in two languages, including French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish.
  • Single Language (French, German, Russian, Spanish): This concentration requires students to complete 30 credits in a single language, including courses at the F200 level or above.
  • Japanese: Students interested in Japanese should refer to the Japanese Studies major for requirements.

Course Requirements

The following courses are required for the B.A. in Foreign Languages:


  • General University Requirements: Students must complete the general university requirements.
  • General Education Requirements: Students must complete the general education requirements.
  • B.A. Degree and Program Requirements: Students must complete the B.A. degree requirements and the baccalaureate capstone requirement as determined by the program.
  • Concentrations: Students must select one concentration and complete the required courses.

Notes

  • In addition to a first and second language, students should complete a well-defined minor related to their career goals.
  • Recommended background courses include LING F101X and LING F216X.
  • F100-level language courses may be counted toward fulfillment of general education requirements.

Two Languages Concentration

  • F200 level or above in the first language: 18 credits
  • F200 level or above in the second language: 15 credits
  • Total Credits: 33 credits
  • Note: These must include two F400-level courses in the target language taken in residence at UAF.

Single Language Concentration

  • Target language at the F200 level or above: 30 credits
  • Total Credits: 30 credits
  • Note: These may include target language courses and/or courses taken in the target language on an approved study abroad program and up to 6 credits of advisor-approved electives from education or linguistics, but must include two F400-level courses in the target language taken in residence at UAF.

Minimum Requirements for Degree

  • Minimum Requirements for Degree: 120 credits
  • Students must earn a C- grade or better in each course.
