Get the best possible grades you can during ALL four years of high school.

Ask your school counselor and teachers who know you well for recommendations. At least a month in advance of college deadlines for recommendations, jog their memories by providing them with a “personal data” or “brag sheet” highlighting your academic accomplishments, athletics, activities, and community service and leadership positions. Also, highlight anything special you did during the summer (for example, foreign travel to improve language skills, volunteer work, projects).

Get feedback on the essays from your teachers and/or other school personnel.


Become involved in your school and/or community during ALL four years and summer vacations. Develop a deep interest or talent in one or more areas.


Decrease your stress by starting your search for colleges early—no later than the start of your junior year. This gives you adequate time for researching colleges, completing applications, writing essays, and taking necessary exams

Tips to help you Adapt to a new country

The very first thing you should do, before visiting a new environment is to research and try to learn about that place. You can prepare for your trip by reading books about the culture, travel guidebooks, and popular Web sites or newspapers relevant to the region you are traveling to. If there will be a language barrier, take language classes or seek out a tutor to make your transition period easier.

To enjoy the most out of your time studying abroad, being an Au pair, Trainee or Intern. Please make an effort to get to know your hosts. If they are mindful of their host’s family lifestyle and mimic it, they’ll have an easy “in” into culture norms, such as rules and customs. Students should also show respect by being open to new experiences, such as family meals and sports events.

Take time to familiarise yourself with your new environment, the kids routine, their beliefs and basically their way of life. This way nothing surprises you or flips you. You will find it easier to adapt when you approach things by understanding their point of view.

It’s not always easy to meet new people, regardless of where you are, but having a social life that you are used to and people you can call on in a time of need are vital to feeling at home in your new country. Joining an expat group, volunteering your time, or becoming a member of clubs that appeal to your interests can all help you develop a network of friends.   

If you spend too much time inside your dorm, you will easily get bored, start to make comparisons and feel like you would be having a better time if you were in your country. But, let’s face it: you’re not even trying to enjoy the experience. Go outside. See what is going on in campus. Meet new people. Go for a walk. There are endless possibilities. And please understand that studying is important, but having a social life is too. Find a balance.

Have something that reminds you of home. It could be some photos you like, letters or gifts you have gotten, your country’s flag or even some typical snacks (these are popular around here, because people love to share them with their international friends). You can put them around your room to make it feel more like home or perhaps just looking at them when you are feeling homesick will make you feel better.
