Basics of Research Data Management
The University of Eastern Finland Library provides this course for doctoral students as part of the curriculum of the University of Eastern Finland Doctoral School.
Course Description
This course introduces the basics of research data management and data management plan. The learning material is divided into chapters that deal with:
- legislation and ethical principles (e.g., contracts, copyright and access rights related to research data, personal data in data management)
- storing and processing of research data during the research (e.g., University of Eastern Finland IT services and other storage solutions and services for data management available to the researcher, data security)
- documentation and metadata
- possibilities and obligations related to sharing and opening research data
- preserving and disposing of research data after the research
- writing a data management plan (DMP) with the DMPTuuli-tool.
Learning Objectives
After completing the course, students can:
- explain and exemplify what good research data management is and why it is important
- illustrate good and responsible data management practices and apply those to their own research data
- apply their own organization's and other relevant data management guidelines to their own research data
- write a data management plan (DMP) as part of the research plan and update it.
Course Structure
The course is open from September 15, 2025, until May 4, 2026. Students can register themselves to the course in Peppi from August 1, 2025, until April 24, 2026. The course is available in English and Finnish.
Additional Module
An optional additional module (1 credit) deepens the implementation of documentation and description during the research and in connection with the publication or opening of data and/or its metadata.
