Program Overview
Organic Chemistry of solvents
Description of the course
The organic chemistry of volatile substances is an open university course that focuses on the organic chemistry of volatile substances. The study course is intended for basic pharmacy studies, which can be used by health care professionals at different stages of their career development, as well as by students entering pharmacy university studies.
Competence goals
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Name the most important organic compounds and compound groups and identify the functional groups of the chemical from the structural formula
- Name‰ simple organic compounds‰ and draw‰ their structural formulas
- Identify the reactive sites of an organic compound, explain their basic reactions and draw simple reaction mechanisms
- List the different types of isomers and identify the stereoisomers based on the structural formula
- To evaluate the pKa values of the most common functional groups of explosives
- Determine the acid-base properties of the solvent based on the pKa value
- To evaluate the effect of the structure of the explosive on its water solubility, distribution coefficient, chemical stability and transport in the body
- You explained how the structure of a drug affects its activity and drug response
- Explained the stages of development of a new fuel
Contents of the course
The content of the course covers the following topics:
- Systematics, nomenclature, structures, functional groups and their pKa values of organic compounds
- Stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms in outline
- Synthesizing, isolating and purifying the drug as well as identifying the synthesis product
- Development curve of the fuel
- The main physicochemical properties of the substance: water solubility, Partition coefficient and chemical stability
- Salts of solvents
- Structure-activity relationships of volatile substances
Method of execution
The course is completed in a multi-format format, which includes lecture recordings, preliminary and homework in eLearn-Moodle, and a second exam, a traditional supervised classroom exam, either on paper or electronically on your own computer.
Evaluation criteria
The course is evaluated numerically on a scale of 0-5. Final exam 75%. Preliminary assignments 25%. The final exam consists of two sub-exams, both of which must receive at least 50% of the points.
Learning materials
Video lectures and lecture handouts. Recommended reading: Adam Renslo, Organic Chemistry of Medicinal Agents, McGraw-Hill Education 2016.
Registration
Registration starts on 4 August 2025 and ends on 23 September 2025. The price of the course is 80 (VAT 0%). The study right period is determined according to the curriculum, covering teaching and exams.
