Course Description
This course is part of the Finnish as a Second Language (S2) teaching studies, which is an additional subject studies in the humanities. The course focuses on assessing the language skills of S2 students and supporting their learning.
Objectives
After completing the course, the student will:
- Know the language skill objectives of S2 teaching in the European Framework of Reference for Languages
- Understand the criteria and methods for assessing language skills and learning outcomes in various S2 teaching contexts
- Be familiar with tools to support S2 students in achieving their objectives
Content
The course covers the following topics:
- Language skill objectives of S2 teaching in the European Framework of Reference for Languages
- Criteria and methods for assessing language skills and learning outcomes in various S2 teaching contexts (e.g., early childhood education, primary education, upper secondary school, integration training, adult education institutions)
- Tools to support S2 students in achieving their objectives
Target Group
The primary target group for this course is professionals working in education and teaching who encounter S2 students in their work, as well as others working in multicultural environments.
Prerequisites
The course requires excellent Finnish language skills (CEFR level B2-C1, if Finnish is not the student's native language). This course is not intended as a Finnish language course.
Study Materials
The course materials include:
- eLearn environment course materials, which include teaching plans, assessment guides and tools, and text samples for assessment exercises
- Research literature
Assessment Criteria
The final project is assessed on a scale of 0-5, and other assignments are assessed as pass/fail.
Implementation
The course is implemented as a scheduled online course in Moodle. There are no scheduled online lectures.
Language
The course is taught in Finnish.
