Program Overview

Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics

Theory meets practice in medical physics. The Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics is a multidisciplinary two-year master's degree programme that combines high-level research and teaching. The programme is designed for all nationalities, and a maximum of 15 students will be accepted into it.

Programme Description

In the programme, theory meets practice: The programme includes the possibility for a clinical internship at the Kuopio University Hospital, consisting of e.g. quality assurance measurements, training in radiation dosage planning for cancer treatment and getting familiar with the routine tasks of a medical physicist. The clinical internship can be replaced with a research internship at one of the high-class research groups at the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland.

The master's programme will equip the student with specialist skills in the field of medical physics. In addition, the course of study will provide the expertise required to pursue a specialization as a medical physicist and can open pathways to further advanced studies and fellowship opportunities.

Upon completion of the programme, the graduate will have a career path tailored to his or her needs or interests, creating a possibility of:

  • Continuing advanced studies to pursue a career as a scientist
  • Becoming a valuable part of industry (e.g., in health technology and engineering)
  • Working in management and teaching
  • Acting in science administration at national level or internationally
  • Continuing in pursuit of a career as a specialized medical physicist

Structure of Studies

The Master's Degree Programme in Medical Physics is a two-year programme. Students who have successfully completed the programme will be awarded with a master's degree in medical physics. During the two years you'll be spending with us, you'll get to know our excellent lecturers, professors, PhD students and other staff members, and you'll be spending a lot of time in our state-of-the-art learning environments. The group size at the lectures is typically around 20 students, which makes the lecture environment peaceful. Teaching is intensive and the student can be in direct contact with the lecturers.

The essential content of the degree programme in medical physics is designed to prepare and equip students for a career in the field of medical physics and technology. Typically, this includes the development of new instrumentation and technology, the development of new medical diagnostic protocols and therapeutic procedures, and improvement of existing technologies.

Some of our courses are held in alternate years.

The full curriculum and detailed information on the courses can be found in Peppi Study Guide.

Admission Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

A previous Bachelor's degree corresponding to at least 3 years of full-time academic studies from an institution for higher education is required from all Master's degree applicants. The degree must be awarded by an internationally recognized university or university of applied sciences.

  • A previous Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, technology or another applicable field, that includes sufficient preparatory studies in physics and mathematics
  • Studies in computer programming (especially in mathematical programming methods), human physiology and anatomy, and probability theory are considered a strong asset
  • Conditionality: if the applicant has not graduated during the application period, they can be selected conditionally

Language Requirements

Applicants must either meet the language proficiency criteria or reach the minimum required language test results to be considered eligible to the University of Eastern Finland. No exceptions will be made and no waivers regarding the language proficiency requirements are given.

  • TOEFL iBT, overall score 92, min. 22 in writing
  • IELTS (academic) overall score 6.5, min. 6.0 in writing
  • PTE (academic), overall score 62, min 54 in writing
  • C1 Advanced overall score C or 180, with min. 162 in writing
  • C2 Proficiency overall score level C1 or 180, with min. 162 in writing
  • National Certificate of Language Proficiency YKI-test: level 5 in all different subtests (reading comprehension, writing, speaking comprehension and speaking)
