Program Overview

Introduction to the Certificate Program in Computed Tomography

The Certificate Program in Computed Tomography is a specialized branch of radiology that utilizes advanced radiography equipment to produce sectional images of the human anatomy. Computed Tomography (CT) technologists perform various diagnostic procedures under the supervision of licensed radiologists or technologists. To produce quality images, CT technologists must work effectively with patients and health professionals, operate sophisticated computer equipment, and observe radiation protection measures.

Job Prospects and Certification

Job prospects in the field of Computed Tomography are experiencing faster-than-average growth nationwide, with many opportunities for entry-level positions. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) National Computed Tomography Certification Exam. However, it is essential to note that felony or misdemeanor convictions may render a student ineligible to take the ARRT exam. Many states also require a license to practice as a radiographer, and continuing education is necessary to maintain current certification status with both the ARRT and state licenses.

Special Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the CT program, students must be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiologic Technology, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine. Nuclear medicine technologists may also be certified by the ARRT or the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB). The program is offered online to accommodate students from all over New Mexico and other parts of the country. Each cohort admits up to 12+ students per new class offering, and students must have a minimum overall college GPA of 3.0.

Required Background Checks and Screening

Students in the Computed Tomography program are required to complete and pass a security background check, FBI fingerprinting, and drug screening to participate in clinical education classes. Past criminal violations may prevent a student from completing the degree and gaining employment in the field.

Required Skills and Abilities

The program enables students to acquire and develop the necessary education and skills to perform as entry-level computed tomography technologists. Students will develop learning habits that demonstrate a commitment to professional and personal growth through participation in professional activities and continuing education. They will understand and apply methods for effective problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
