Museum Studies Graduate Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies provides specialized interdisciplinary training that enables students to pursue careers in museums in the public or private sectors. The curriculum includes museology, methods, exhibit development, collections management, conservation, curation, and practice in Museum Studies.
Overview
The Museum Studies Graduate Certificate program is designed for individuals who want to enhance their understanding of museum work. It may be completed as a stand-alone certification or in conjunction with a Master's degree in Anthropology, Art History, History, Public History, Studio Art, or other related disciplines.
Requirements
The core requirements for the certificate include:
- ANTH 545: Advanced Museology
- ARTS 503: Preventive Conservation/Collections Care
- HIST 594: Public History Seminar
- Internship (credits from ANTH, ART, or HIST)
Controlled electives include:
- ANTH 518: Advanced Historical Archaeology
- ANTH 540: Cultural Resource Management
- ANTH 549: Advanced Museum Anthropology
- ANTH 556: Advanced Native American Intersections in Museums
- ANTH 564: Advanced Curation Crisis in Archaeology

Students must select two controlled electives from the list above.
Total Credits
The total credits required for the certificate are 18.
Admission
To complete a graduate certificate, students must apply for admission to this non-degree program. Even if they are already enrolled in a graduate program at NMSU, they will need to complete a separate application to be admitted to the certificate program. Once they have been admitted to the program and have completed all of the necessary coursework, they will need to apply to be awarded the certificate through their myNMSU account.
Note
This list is regularly modified as new courses are added to the catalog, or old ones are phased out. Eligible courses are determined by a committee with at least one representative from Art, Anthropology, and History. Substitutions may be approved with the advice of Museum Studies Faculty in Art, History, and Anthropology by the Department Head of Anthropology.
