Program Overview
Introduction to the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program
The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program is designed to meet the demand for skilled technicians in the industry. The climate in New Mexico creates a need for professionals who can install, maintain, and repair heating and cooling systems in various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
Program Overview
The HVAC/R program at DACC uses state-of-the-art training facilities equipped with modern test equipment and tools. Students learn to service, repair, and maintain heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, as well as read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and symbols to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.
Key Skills and Knowledge
- Service, repair, and maintain heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems
- Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and symbols to diagnose and troubleshoot problems
- Evaluate, diagnose, and service various mechanical and electrical controls
- Apply mathematics related to the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade
- Handle customer relations, shop management procedures, and record keeping relative to the trade
- Properly use special tools and testing equipment
- Become certified in Section 608, EPA Certification
Career Opportunities
After completing their degree or certificate in HVAC/R, students can pursue a variety of rewarding careers in the field, including:
- Energy Auditors, who assess energy efficiency in buildings and recommend improvements
- HVAC Mechanics and Installers, who specialize in installing and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
- Maintenance and Repair Workers, who ensure that HVAC systems operate effectively and efficiently
Job Shadowing and Practicum Training
Students complete a one-credit Job Shadowing course during their first semester, allowing them to observe the daily activities of a HVAC technician. A unique practicum training program is offered during the final semester, providing students with field experiences and the opportunity to practice and refine their skills alongside journeymen technicians.
Curriculum and Physical Requirements
The curriculum is competency and performance-based, using multimedia classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory exercises. Students are required to perform the same job duties and meet the same physical requirements as they will as graduates in the field, including:
- Working in inclement weather
- Lifting up to 50 pounds from the ground
- Having good eye-hand coordination
- Working safely around electrical hazards using appropriate safety equipment
- Working safely using hand and power tools
- Ascending and descending stairs and ladders
- Standing, squatting, stooping, or kneeling for long periods
Licensure Requirements
Licensure for journeyman gas fitters, journeyman refrigeration workers, and journeyman sheet metal workers requires both a written and practical exam. Note that not all licensing agencies provide special testing accommodations.
