Program Overview
Introduction to Building Construction Technology Program
The Building Construction Technology (BCT) program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the construction industry. The program covers various aspects of building construction, including safety, materials, tools, and techniques.
Program Courses
The BCT program offers a range of courses that cover different areas of building construction, including:
- BCT 100: Building Trades I (8 credits)
- Equipment and general safety
- Human relations, building construction surveying, footings, foundation form work, framing, sheathing, insulation
- Basic electrical wiring and plumbing
- BCT 101: Introduction to Construction I (2 credits)
- Basic safety, including personal protective equipment
- How to perform basic construction tasks safely
- What to do if an accident occurs
- BCT 102: Introduction to Construction II (2 credits)
- Introduction to power and hand tools
- Blueprints and basic rigging hardware and techniques
- BCT 103: Introduction to Construction Laboratory (3 credits)
- Provides students the opportunity to practice skills acquired in BCT 101 and BCT 102
- BCT 104: Woodworking Skills I (3 credits)
- Use and care of hand tools and elementary power tools
- Safety procedures and supervised project construction
- BCT 105: Woodworking Skills II (3 credits)
- Advanced woodworking skills
- Use of advanced power tools, power tool safety, and supervised construction
- BCT 106: Woodworking Theory and Practice (3 credits)
- History of wood manufacturing
- Industrial techniques, wood characteristics, stains, and finishes
- BCT 107: Painting I (4 credits)
- Types and applications of paints and clear coatings
- Use of fasteners, caulks, and sealants
- BCT 109: Plumbing I (3 credits)
- Orientation to the trade
- Materials used in the plumbing industry
- Different types of plumbing fixtures
- BCT 110: Blueprint Reading for Building Trades (4 credits)
- Same as DRFT 151, OEET 101, OEPB 110
- BCT 111: Small Equipment Maintenance and Repair (4 credits)
- Covers small engine theory, troubleshooting, and repair
- Auto maintenance, hydraulic theory, and repair lubricants, batteries, and scheduled tool maintenance
- BCT 114: Basic Carpentry (3 credits)
- Orientation to the trade
- Wood building materials, fasteners, and adhesives
- BCT 115: Carpentry Level I (3 credits)
- Describes the various kinds of roofs and provides instructions for layout of different roofing systems
- BCT 116: Basic Carpentry Lab (2 credits)
- Provides students the opportunity to practice skills acquired in BCT 114 and BCT 115
- BCT 117: Plumbing 1A (3 credits)
- Introduction to the plumbing profession
- BCT 118: Math for Building Trades (3 credits)
- Geometry, algebra, arithmetic, and basic trigonometry pertaining to mathematical applications in the building trades field
- BCT 123: Residential Wiring I (3 credits)
- Introduction to residential electrical wiring trade
- Electrical safety practices, basic electrical circuits, and theory
- BCT 130: Professional Development and Leadership (1 credit)
- As members and/or officers of various student professional organizations, students gain experience in leadership, team building, and community service
- BCT 150: Forklift Operation (1 credit)
- Classroom instruction and hands-on practice to prepare students to operate a forklift safely in the workplace
- BCT 200: Building Trades II (8 credits)
- Continuation of BCT 100: roofing, exterior and interior finish, masonry, door, window, and cabinet installation
- BCT 206: Advanced Cabinetmaking (3 credits)
- Advanced cabinetmaking skills
- BCT 209: Plumbing II (3 credits)
- Continuation of BCT 109
- BCT 217: Building and the Environment (3 credits)
- Introduction to LEED's and Green Building Fundamentals
- BCT 218: Plumbing 2 (4 credits)
- This course builds on the skills and knowledge students have gained in previous BCT introduction to plumbing courses
- BCT 219: Weatherization in Construction (3 credits)
- Introduction to industry weatherization standards and practices utilized in the construction of buildings for the purpose of energy conservation
- BCT 221: Cooperative Experience I (1-4 credits)
- Supervised cooperative work program
- BCT 223: Residential Wiring II (3 credits)
- Introduction to electrical raceways and fittings
- BCT 255: Special Topics (1-6 credits)

- BCT 290: Special Problems in Building Technology (1-4 credits)
- Individual studies in areas directly related to building technologies
