SURG-SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY (SURG)
The Surgical Technology program is designed to prepare students for a career in surgical technology. The program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to function actively in the surgical environment.
Program Courses
- SURG 120: Surgical Technology Clinical I (2-4 Credits)
This course is a health-related work-based learning experience that enables students to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. The course provides an introduction to the operating room, observation of surgical procedures, and direct participation in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative preparation of individual cases.
- Prerequisite(s): BIOL 2310, BIOL 2210, BIOL 2225, NURS 150

- SURG 140: Introduction to Surgical Technology (4 Credits)
This course is an orientation to surgical technology theory, surgical pharmacology and anesthesia, technology sciences, and patient care concepts. The course is designed to prepare students to enter the surgical environment with entry-level knowledge necessary to understand patient responses to disease, illness, hospitalization, surgical procedures, and commonly used pharmacological and anesthetic agents.
- Prerequisite(s): Admission to Surgical Technology Program; BIOL 2310, BIOL 2225, & NURS 150
- SURG 145: Fundamentals of Perioperative Concepts & Techniques (4-5 Credits)
This course provides in-depth coverage of perioperative concepts, including aseptic/sterile principles and practice, infectious processes, wound healing, and the creation and maintenance of the sterile field. The course is designed to prepare students to enter the surgical environment with entry-level knowledge of aseptic technique principles and practices.
- Prerequisite(s): Admission to Surgical Technology Program, BIOL 2310, BIOL 2210, BIOL 2225, & NURS 150
- SURG 150: Surgical Procedures I (4-5 Credits)
This course introduces students to surgical procedures and related pathologies, with an emphasis on general, obstetrics/gynecology, genitourinary, otorhinolaryngology, and orthopedic surgical specialties.
- Prerequisite(s): SURG 140, SURG 145, and SURG 120
- SURG 155: Pharmacology for the Surgical Technology (2 Credits) This course provides an orientation to surgical pharmacology and anesthesia, designed to prepare students to enter the surgical environment with knowledge necessary to categorize the classification of drugs, calculate drug dosages, and identify the therapeutic use, routes of administration, indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of pharmacologic agents used in the perioperative setting.
- SURG 160: Surgical Procedures II (6 Credits)
This course introduces students to surgical procedures and related pathologies, with an emphasis on thoracic, peripheral vascular, plastic/reconstructive, ophthalmology, cardiac, and neurological surgical specialties.
- Prerequisite(s): SURG 150, SURG 260
- SURG 230: Professional Readiness (2 Credits)
This course transitions students into professional readiness for employment, professional readiness for attaining certification, and professional readiness for maintaining certification status.

- SURG 260: Surgical Technology Clinical II (4 Credits)
This course provides students with a health-related work-based learning experience, enabling them to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. The course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to function actively in the role of a surgical technologist and healthcare team member in a clinical setting.
- Prerequisite(s): SURG 120, SURG 140, & SURG 145
- SURG 265: Surgical Technology Clinical III (4 Credits) This course provides students with a health-related work-based learning experience, enabling them to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. The course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to function actively in the role of a surgical technologist and healthcare team member in a clinical setting, with a focus on refinement and application of basic principles and practices combined with entry-level employment competency expectations.
Program Admission
Admission to the Surgical Technology Program is required for enrollment in most courses. Prerequisites for admission include BIOL 2310, BIOL 2210, BIOL 2225, and NURS 150.
