Introduction to Athletic Training

This course introduces students to the principles of athletic training, including the historical development of athletic training and sports medicine, the knowledge and experiences needed to become a Certified Athletic Trainer, and the specific responsibilities and duties of an athletic trainer.


Medical Terminology

This course covers the structure of medical language with emphasis on sports medicine-related terminology, including analysis and interpretation of medical documentation.


Clinical Practicum I and II

These courses provide hands-on experience in clinical settings, where students learn to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. Students learn to perform selected taping and wrapping techniques, understand HIPAA guidelines, and develop proficiency in the use of physiological and anatomical terms.


Introduction to Kinesiology

This course introduces students to the field of Kinesiology, exploring areas such as exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, motor behavior, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, and exercise prescription.


Social Foundations of Physical Activity

This course examines the historical and cultural foundations of physical activity, including vocational, scientific, and educational data on careers in health education, physical education, and recreation.


Emergency Response in Sports Medicine

This course provides knowledge and experience in emergency care procedures, blood-borne pathogens, and first aid. Students receive certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and in First Aid upon successful completion of the course.


Anatomy and Physiology I and II

These courses provide a detailed study of the structure and function of the human musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, and peripheral nervous systems.


Fitness for Health and Sport

This course studies the fitness needs for health enhancement and sport participation, including the importance of incorporating positive fitness/wellness habits within one's lifestyle.


Career Preparation

This course helps students prepare for their careers by exploring career opportunities, creating professional resumes, writing letters of application, and seeking letters of recommendation.


Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:


  • Understand the historical development of athletic training and sports medicine
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in emergency situation prevention, recognition, and management
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic skills of musculoskeletal injury recognition and management
  • Identify the components of an effective emergency action plan
  • Assess the scene and patient during an emergency situation
  • Demonstrate proper universal precautions and wound care
  • Demonstrate effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation, AED use, and rescue breathing airway management techniques
  • Demonstrate effective splinting techniques and understanding of cervical stabilization
  • Identify components of acute care for general medical and orthopedic emergencies

Program Requirements

The program requires students to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and complete all required courses, including clinical practicum and internship experiences. Students must also obtain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and in First Aid.
